Anemia Foundations Course

Anemia Foundations is a comprehensive medical education course covering the full spectrum of red blood cell disorders; from the fundamentals of haematopoiesis and RBC physiology to the diagnosis and management of clinically significant anemias. Designed for medical students and healthcare professionals, this course builds both conceptual understanding and practical diagnostic reasoning.
Self-paced · Intermediate · Medical & Health Sciences

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the physiological basis of red blood cell production and destruction
  • Classify and systematically approach any anemia using a structured diagnostic framework
  • Interpret key laboratory findings including CBC, reticulocyte index, iron studies, and peripheral smears
  • Identify and differentiate major anemia subtypes; from nutritional deficiencies to inherited hemoglobinopathies
  • Apply evidence-based management principles across a range of clinical scenarios

Who This Course is For

This course is ideal for medical and health sciences students in preclinical or clinical years, junior doctors looking to consolidate their hematology knowledge, and allied health professionals seeking a deeper understanding of red blood cell disorders.
No prior hematology training is required; though a basic understanding of physiology is recommended.

Course Modules

Module 1 — Red Blood Cell Biology
Build a strong foundation with the science behind blood. Topics include the functions of blood, hematopoiesis across developmental stages, the role of cytokines, the detailed process of erythropoiesis, physiology of RBC membrane and metabolism.

Module 2 — Approach to Anemia
Develop a systematic clinical framework. Learn to classify anemias by RBC size, interpret reticulocyte counts, build differential diagnoses, and select appropriate investigations. This module also covers anemia of chronic disease.

Module 3 — Hematinic Deficiencies
A deep dive into the most common anemias encountered in clinical practice — iron deficiency, B12 deficiency and folate deficiency — including how to distinguish between them.

Module 4 — Hemoglobinopathies
Understand the genetic basis, clinical spectrum, and management of inherited globin disorders, including alpha thalassemia, beta thalassemia, and sickle cell disease.

Module 5 — Hemolytic Anemias
Cover the mechanisms and clinical presentations of red cell destruction, including hereditary spherocytosis, G6PD deficiency, and autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

Medical education often suffers from information overload. To combat this, our course materials are built differently. We translate complex hematological concepts into high-yield, visually driven learning. To solidify the visual learning, every single module concludes with a dedicated quiz to test your immediate retention. Furthermore, the course integrates comprehensive clinical case studies, allowing you to apply your visual frameworks and diagnostic approaches to real-world patient scenarios.
